Airlines serving the United Kingdom-Mexico international niche
The trans-Atlantic niche between the UK and Mexico is served by three airlines. The only Mexican company serving this niche is the Republic’s flagship carrier: Aeromexico; meanwhile, the UK participates in this international niche with two companies: British Airways, the UK’s flagship carrier, and TUI Fly UK, the latter offering predominantly package holidays though ‘flight only’ options are available from both companies.
Until recently -Sept. 2019- the other -former- leisure carrier from the UK: Thomas Cook Airlines was also serving this niche market but has unfortunately gone into receivership. Throughout 2018 -according to the Mexican Transport and Communications Ministry (SCT)- Thomas Cook Airlines transported 218,973 passengers between the United Kingdom and Mexico, mainly to Cancun, so -unless another carrier appears on the scene- there will be less ‘Brits’ on Mexico’s Caribbean coast over the upcoming Winter 2019/20 season.
The passenger count on the trans-Atlantic niche between the United Kingdom and Mexico has been increasing steadily in recent years; according to Mexico’s Foreign Relations Ministry (SRE) -throughout 2017- a total of 563,000 British nationals arrived to Mexico by air.
A sign of the growth taking place in this international market is that according to figures published by the Mexican Transport and Communications Ministry (SCT) -in 2018- TUI Fly UK alone transported 552,101 passengers to Mexico, thus making this leisure carrier the largest player operating in the Europe-Mexico trans-Atlantic niche.
However, this year’s numbers will -no doubt- see a drop in the British visitor numbers to Mexico due to the -aforementioned- demise of the Thomas Cook Group. However, not all is bad news as -later this year- TUI Fly UK will become the first European carrier to provide direct flights between ‘the Old Continent’ and the southern tip of the world’s longest Peninsula, to land at Los Cabos International Airport (SJD), Baja California Sur.

British Airways -also referred to as just BA– offers two choices of trans-Atlantic flights from the UK to Mexico; it is a member of the International Consolidated Airlines Group, S.A., a holding company best known as IAG, along with other airlines (see below for further details).
To Mexico’s Caribbean coast, BA offers direct flights between London Gatwick (LGW) and Cancun International Airport (CUN), currently -Sept. 2019- operating the route with four weekly frequencies: Mon., Wed., Thurs. and Saturdays. In competition with TUI Fly UK.
The other option from this carrier connects the two capital cities by way of the London Heathrow International Airport (LHR) and Mexico City Benito Juarez International Airport (MEX), currently providing daily services on this trans-Atlantic route. In this case, competing with the Mexican flagship carrier: Aeroméxico.

British Airways also offers connecting services for other Mexican destinations through its association with the Mexican LCC: Interjet, as well as with the carrier’s OneWorld partners that connect the Mexican capital to other countries. And speaking of OneWorld -according to the Alliance’s official Web site- BA is the carrier with the second largest destination offering of the Group, at 250 -behind only American Airlines with 350; and -regarding the number of countries/territories served- BA is again second, with a total of 90 -behind only Qatar Airways- which serves 100.
The UK flagship carrier was one of the founding member airlines of the OneWorld global airline alliance, which was announced -in 1998- and actually created -in 1999- thus bringing the UK flagship carrier together with American Airlines, Air Canada -formerly Canadian Airlines- plus Cathay Pacific Airways and Qantas Airways, among others. OneWorld now has 13 member airlines.
In 2011, the International Consolidated Airlines Group, S.A (IAG) was created -as a holding company- so as to facilitate the merger between British Airways and Iberia -the Spanish flagship carrier- both airlines now being 100% owned by the Group.
During its first year of operations -2011- IAG member airlines -see below- transported just over 51 million passengers; since then the Group’s passenger numbers has more than doubled, closing 2017 with 104 million passengers.
British Airways is one of two UK airlines to offer direct UK-Mexico flights., and the only one serving the capital of the Mexican Republic: Mexico City.
