Airlines serving the United Kingdom-Mexico international niche

The trans-Atlantic niche between the UK and Mexico is served by three airlines. The only Mexican company serving this niche is the Republic’s flagship carrier: Aeromexico; meanwhile, the UK participates in this international niche with two companies: British Airways, the UK’s flagship carrier, and TUI Fly UK, the latter offering predominantly package holidays though ‘flight only’ options are available from both companies.

Until recently -Sept. 2019- the other -former- leisure carrier from the UK: Thomas Cook Airlines was also serving this niche market but has unfortunately gone into receivership. Throughout 2018 -according to the Mexican Transport and Communications Ministry (SCT)- Thomas Cook Airlines transported 218,973 passengers between the United Kingdom and Mexico, mainly to Cancun, so -unless another carrier appears on the scene- there will be less ‘Brits’ on Mexico’s Caribbean coast over the upcoming Winter 2019/20 season.

The passenger count on the trans-Atlantic niche between the United Kingdom and Mexico has been increasing steadily in recent years; according to Mexico’s Foreign Relations Ministry (SRE) -throughout 2017- a total of 563,000 British nationals arrived to Mexico by air.

A sign of the growth taking place in this international market is that according to figures published by the Mexican Transport and Communications Ministry (SCT) -in 2018- TUI Fly UK alone transported 552,101 passengers to Mexico, thus making this leisure carrier the largest player operating in the Europe-Mexico trans-Atlantic niche.

However, this year’s numbers will -no doubt- see a drop in the British visitor numbers to Mexico due to the -aforementioned- demise of the Thomas Cook Group. However, not all is bad news as -later this year- TUI Fly UK will become the first European carrier to provide direct flights between ‘the Old Continent’ and the southern tip of the world’s longest Peninsula, to land at Los Cabos International Airport (SJD), Baja California Sur.
