Passenger Numbers – Zihuatanejo Airport

According to the official figures relased by OMA, back in the year 2000 the International Airport of Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo handled almost 700,000 passengers, the precise figure being 690,902. However, thereafter the Airport registered three years of passenger number contraction to bottom out in 2003 with a figure of 554,516 passengers having transitted the installations.

In the year 2000, Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo registered almost 700,000 passengers

Then came three years of positive growth with the passenger figure peaking at 681,581 in the year 2006. Thereafter began a 6-year period of negative results, finally bottoming out once again with an annual figure of 457,906 in 2012. However, the upward trend returned in 2013, when 459,799 passengers transitted the terminal and then, finally, the installations managed to surpass the half million mark for the first time since 2009, having registered 508,065 passengers in 2014.

Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo finally managed to register over half a million visitors again in 2014

The Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo Airport, for the second consecutive year, maintained its place in the (now) group of seven OMA airports having registered between half a million and a million passengers in 2015. In this case, with a figure of 562,099 passengers, giving the airport an overall gain of 10.6% compared with the 2014 results, and pushing the Airport up one place on Mexico’s busiest airports list to position #27. The passenger figures for 2015 were split between the domestic and international markets as follows: 332,920 and 229,179 respectively.

In 2015, the Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo terminal was placed at #27 on Mexico’s busiest airports list

The 2016 passenger numbers here once again showed a contraction, though in realistic terms the global figure was down by only around 5,000 passengers, to close the year with a figure of 557,389 passengers, meaning this Terminal closed 2016 at #29 on the country’s top airports list, having slipped down two places. Then, in 2017, the Airport posted positive passenger figures of just below 6 million passengers, the exact figure being 597,902; the figures for the year were divided into 366,035 domestic and 231,867 international passengers, to maintain its position at #29.

Unfortunately, in 2018, Zihuatanejo Airport registered an annual contraction of 5.3% in its global passenger headcount, with a total of  566,497 passengers for the period

In 2018, Zihuatanejo Airport handled a total of 566,497 passengers to register its second contraction in visitor numbers in the last three years, the global headcount for the year being down 5.3% when compared to the previous year; the domestic niche here handled 345,040 passengers -down 5.7% on 2017- whilst the international sector handled 221,457 passengers -down 4.5% on 2017- and so ZIH was one of just two of Grupo OMA’s airport network to post negative numbers throughout 2018.

The above passenger numbers resulted in Zihuatanejo International Airport slipping down 3 places on Mexico’s top airports list in 2018, to #32

Throughout 2019, according to the official Grupo OMA press release, Zihuatanejo Airport handled a total of 625,186 passengers to post a year-on-year gain of 10.4% for the period and thus return to positive figures after a two year contraction in its visitor numbers. The domestic niche was the saviour of the day with a passenger headcount of 405,847 passengers to give the fourth largest increase among the 13 airports that make up the Grupo OMA network with regard to this niche market. Meanwhile, the international passenger numbers continued with the negative trend, though to a lesser degree, with this sector contributing 219,339 passengers to the total and thus closed the period with a dip of exactly 1.0% compared with the previous year.

Zihuatanejo International Airport returned to positive passenger numbers in 2019, with the domestic niche registering the largest annual growth rate of the Group at 43.1%
