Introduction to Leon Del Bajío Airport

The airport codes for Del Bajio Airport are as follows: IATA CODE: BJX // ICAO CODE: MMLO

The International Airport of Del Bajio is located close to the city of Silao, but is also known as the Guanajuato International Airport and the León International Airport, due to its location, which lies almost between these two important cities. Guanajuato -30 kms. from the Terminal- is the state capital, whilst León, just 15 kilometers from the airport, is the business capital of the state of Guanajuato, though it is also a well-known tourist destination. Due to its proximity to the municipal of Silao, this Terminal is also referred to loically as Silao Airport.

The International Airport of Del Bajio was inaugurated on February 22, 1990

The León Del Bajio Airport was created to replace the León Airfield which was inaugurated on February 23, 1928; the new airport installations form part of the network of 12 Mexican airports operated by Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico, S.A.B. de C. V. (Grupo GAP), of which the Del Bajio Airport was the 5th most important for the Group in 2017; in 2018, this Terminal posted an annual passenger increase of almost 20% to close the year with a headcount of 2,338,800 visitors arriving/departing by air. Last year, the León Del Bajio Airport handled over 2 million passengers for the first time

The local cities of Irapuato, Guanajuato, León, Salamanca and San Miguel de Allende are all within León del Bajío Airport’s catchment area. Also of interest is that the Del Bajío International Airport also acts as one of a network of 5 bases maintained by the Aerolíneas Executivas executive charter company.

The León del Bajío International Airport (BJX) currently offers a total of 19 routes. On the domestic front, BJX is served by 5 Mexican airlines, collectively providing 9 destinations throughout the Republic, the players here being the Grupo Aeroméxico carriers: Aeroméxico, the country’s flagship carrier, and its affiliate Aeroméxico Connect (3 jointly), along with the country’s LCC: Interjet (2). Also operating at BJX are the two Mexican ULCCs: VivaAerobus (4), and Volaris (8), plus the Mexican charter airline: Magnicharters (1).

Direct International flights to / from Leon Del Bajío

The international options at León del Bajío have also been increased by the ULCC Volaris which added two new US destinations out of BJX in Nov. 2018., and -in Oct. 2019- the company added services to Fresno, thus upping its current international destinations at BJX to 6, and making it the leading international carrier at this airport in terms of destinations. The only other Mexican airline currently providing international options here is the Grupo Aeroméxico affiliate: Aeroméxico Connect, with two routes, also to the USA.

The international carriers present at León del Bajío come in the form of two US carriers: American Airlines (1) and United Airlines (1), together offering a further 2 US gateways into BJX, so there are currently a total of 10 cross-border services out of this airport, all of which head north to the USA.

On Nov. 20, 2018., Volaris upped its international options at BJX from 3 to 5, all in the USA. Both routes kicked off with twice weekly services: Bajío (BJX-SMF) Sacramento, followed by (BJX-SJC) San José, California; more recently still -on Oct. 28, 2019- this ULCC added León (BJX-FAT) Fresno flights to bring its international portfolio at BJX to 6

The parking here offers both long and short stay options, the prices are hourly (no fractions allowed) and cost as follows for the first five hours: MXN 34, MXN 32, MXN 34, MXN 27 and MXN 25, respectively; the maximum daily charge for the first 14 days is MXN 150. The ‘official taxi’ options provided at the León Del Bajio Airport are offered by four companies: Autotransporte Terrestre Silaoenses, Transportación terrestre Aeropuerto del Bajío, Transportación Terrestre Aeropuerto Internacional del Bajio and Transporte Ejecutivo Terrestre Aeroportuario.

The above companies offer the following prices for the basic services: IrapuatoMXN 485, whilst to the downtown zones of the following cities will cost you: León: MXN 400; Silao: MXN 280, and Guanajuato: MXN 485; other parts of the city you choose will have a different price tag.

The shopping options at León del Bajío include the a couple of handcrafts stores, an ‘Aero Market’ and a Sunglasses- Fashion store, plus -of course- the duty free outlet. The list is not definitive.

Passenger Numbers – Leon Del Bajío Airport

As at many of Mexico’s airports, the Del Bajío Airport registered its highest ever passenger numbers in 2008; then, in 2009, suffered a large drop in its visitor numbers due to the Bird Flu epedemic, a trend which continued in 2010.

However, since 2011, the passenger trend has once again returned to posting annual increases: in 2011, the Terminal registered its first annual increase since 2008, with a figure of 854,200 passengers; in 2012, the number was 950,300 and in 2013: 998,100. In 2014, the airport finally saw its passenger count surpass its previous record -1,102,800- after registering 1,222,100 throughout the year, an annual increase of no less than 22.4%.

In 2015, once again the passenger numbers at Leon Del Bajío International Airport registered strong growth, with a total of 1,472,811 passengers arriving/departing the terminal; moreover, the figure almost equalled the percentage increase registered in 2014, with the 2015 figures translating into an overall increase of 22.36%. For any airport in the world, it must be said that it’s pretty impressive to register two consecutive annual percentage increases of over 22%, in Mexico it meant the airport jumped two places on the country’s busiest airports list to close the year at #9, which was the first time this terminal had been placed among the Republic’s top ten airports.

The annual figures for 2015 also showed that, with 552,322 of the aforesaid passengers arriving at this terminal on international flights, the Leon Del Bajío International Airport was placed #7 regarding the top-ten list of Mexico’s airports within the international niche, an annual increase of 15.5% in this sector.

In 2016, this Airport added around 220,000 passengers to its 2015 result, translating into a 14.9% increase and closing the year with a total of 1,692,864 passengers; despite the positive result, the Del Bajìo Airport slipped one place on the country’s busiest airports list to #10. These numbers were split into an 18.8% increase in the domestic figures and a 7.9% increase in the international arena.

This was followed in 2017 by a total of 1,940,411 passengers, almost 300,000 more than the previous year and translating to an annual increase of 14.6%; despite the percentage increase being slightly lower than in 2016, the result was sufficient to push this Terminal back up to position #9 on the country’s top airports list. Regarding the domestic niche, the Airport registered 1,295,317 passengers, a year-on-year increase of 17.6% whilst the international sector contributed with the remaining 645,174 passengers, an 8.3% annual increase.

Leon Del Bajìo International Airport returned to #9 on Mexico’s busiest airports list in 2017

In 2018, the ‘Del Bajío’ International Airport handled a total of 2,338,800 passengers to register a very respectable annual increase of 19.6% in its visitor numbers, up over 380,000 on the previous year. From the aforementioned total, the domestic niche excelled itself throughout 2018 with an annual increase of 26.5% to give a total headcount in this sector of 1,654,300 passengers; for its part, the international market at Del Bajío contributed with 684,500 passengers to post an annual increase of 5.7%, after increasing the numbers in this niche by over 36,000 passengers, compared with 2017.

León Del Bajío International Airport upped its annual gobal passenger headcount in 2018 by almost 20%

Throughout 2019 -according to the official press release from Grupo GAP- the global passenger count at León del Bajío was 2,755,800 to post another excellent annual increase of 17.8%, the second largest year-on-year gain among the 12 Mexican airports that make up the Grupo GAP network in the Republic to once again maintain its place at #9 on Mexico’s busiest airports list. The domestic niche excelled here last year with an annual increase of 24.3% to register 2,056,900 passengers -again the second largest gain in this sector- among grupo GAP’s Mexican airport network; for its part, the international market at BJX contributed with the remaining 698,900 cross-border passengers -up 2.1%- for the period. All in all, a good way to close the last decade here at BJX.
