Passenger Numbers – Mexicali Airport

Regarding the passenger numbers for the General Rodolfo Sánchez Taboada International Airport of Mexicali, in 2010, it registered 461,400 passengers; the numbers then peaked at 521,900 in 2012, the first time it had passed the half-million mark, then dipped to 496,000 in 2013. For 2014, the terminal returned to positve numbers, surpassing the 500,000 passenger barrier for the second time -according to the official figures released by Grupo GAP- to register 507,200 passengers, of which 504,200 were domestic.

In 2014, Mexicali registered 507,200 passengers, thus surpassing the half-million mark again

Mexicali reported an annual increase of 17.4% in its passenger figures for 2015, thus pushing the numbers well above the half-million mark at 586,396 passengers for only the third time. This figure easily surpasses the previous peak at this terminal, registered in 2012. The vast majority of the aforementioned passengers arrived to Mexicali on domestic flights, according to the official statistics published by Grupo GAP, the precise number was 591,200 in stark contrast to the 4,500 visitors to arrive to the Terminal on international flights, though the latter figure provided the Airport with an impressive annual increase of 41.4% in this niche.

Mexicali’s statistics for 2015 upped the airport 3 places on Mexico’s busiest airports list, to #26

The positive trend continued throughout 2016 with the Mexicali Airport registering a total of 716,200 passengers to give a year-on-year increase of 20.2% for the period. From the aforementioned total, the domestic niche contributed the vast majority with 710,700 passengers to provide this niche with a 20.2% annual increase, whilst the international sector added the remaining 5,500 passengers to register an impressive 23.2% increase.

For the 2nd consecutive year, Mexicali increased its place on the top airports list by 3, to #23

In 2017, Mexicali Airport surpassed the 800,000 barrier for the first time to register 804,000 and thus translates to a 12.3% annual increase. For its part, the domestic headcount was 798,500 to increase this niche’s annual total by 12.4% whilst the international numbers increased by just 0.3% to give a total of 5,500 passengers (the official numbers released by Grupo GAP are rounded to the 100s), thus meaning that Mexicali once again upped its standing -this time by 2 places- on the country’s top airports list; so … in just three years Mexicanli has increased its standing on the country’s busiest airports list by no less than 8 places.

Mexicali once again upped its standing by 2 places on Mexico’s top airports list to close 2017 at #21

Throughout 2018, the Mexicali International Airport registered by far the highest growth of all Grupo GAP’s Mexican airport network, having handled 1,138,500 passengers to post an impressive global increase of 41.6% and thus easily surpass the 1-million-passenger mark for 2018, an increase of almost 335,000 passengers compared with 2017; perhaps more impressive is the fact that it thus more than doubled its passenger headcount of 2014 in just 4 years.

Mexicali International Airport posted a global increase of 41.6% in its passenger numbers for 2018 to easily surpass the 1-million-passenger threshold

Of the aforementioned global passenger numbers, the domestic niche at MXL contributed with 1,132,600 throughout 2018 -an annual increase of 41.8% in this sector- whilst the international sector -never a strong point at MXL- posted a total of just 5,900 passengers to show a more moderate growth of exactly 7%, moderate, but still growth in this cross border niche. These figures mean that -in 2018- Grupo GAP’s Mexican airport network registered 7 airports with over a million passengers, an impressive first for this airport Group.

Due to the impressive growth in passengers at Mexicali in 2018, this Terminal upped its standing on Mexico’s busiest airports list by no less than 4 places, to reach #17

Grupo GAP releases its passenger statistics rounded up to the nearest hundred, which is why the above numbers end in at least two zeros
