Introduction to Reynosa Airport

The Reynosa Airport codes are as follows: IATA Code: REX // ICAO Code: MMRX

The International Airport of Reynosa, also known as the General Lucio Blanco International Airport, lies 15 Kms. to the southeast of the city, which -in turn- is across the border from the US city of McAllen (Texas). This airport is located in the State of Tamaulipas and forms part of the network operated by Grupo Aeroportuario Centro Norte, S.A. de C.V. (OMA); provides services from 07:00 to 19:00 hours daily.

The International Airport of Reynosa was inaugurated on May 11th, 1960

Reynosa Airport lies at an elevation of just 42.5 mts. and has a surface area of 418.11 hectares; the passenger terminal offers visitors an area of 2,608 m2 (see investment plans below) and serves mainly business travellers visiting the local maquiladores – manufacturing companies – which at Reynosa are mainly in the electronics sector.

Reynosa Airport was named in honour of the revolutionary hero General José Lucio Blanco Fuentes

The Reynosa Airport is the base for the air taxi and charter services company Aero DaVinci Internacional, which also provides some scheduled routes, see below for details. And, as far as the passenger numbers here are concerned, Reynosa Airport handled 485,727 passengers in 2017, thus placing it as the 11th busiest of the 13 Mexican airports operated by Grupo OMA; this Terminal posted a negative result in 2018 -compared to 2017- with the year registering 466,934 passengers at Reynosa (see below for further details).

Investment Plans for Reynosa Airport

Reynosa International Airport is to receive a total investment of MXP 347.5 mn. (US$ 20.15* mn.), according to Grupo OMA’s Master Development Program for 2016-2020. In this case, the first two years of the Program will see the highest levels of investment at this airport, with the installations receiving MXP 172.2 mn. in 2016, and a further MXP 141.6 mn. in 2017.

Over the period 2016-2020, Reynosa Airport will receive a total investment of around US$ 20.15* mn.

Thereafter, in 2018, the investment at Reynosa is programmed to be MXN 16.5 mn., followed by MXP 8.9 mn. in 2019 and, in the last year of the program, it will receive the lowest amount of investment at just MXP 8.3 mn.

Over this period, Reynosa Airport will benefit from the construction of a new Terminal building

The majority (MXP 302 mn.) of the aforementioned monies will be invested in the construction of a new Terminal for the Airport; the construction of the new Terminal was officially launched on Dec. 12, 2016., with the presence of the local state Governor:  Lic. Francisco Javier García Cabeza de Vaca, among other governmental representatives, as well as Grupo OMA’s Director General: Porfirio González.

The total cost of the new Terminal building is estimated to be MXP 302 million

According to the official press release at the time, the construction of the terminal was to be completed in 20 months; however, on Feb. 15, 2018., Grupo OMA presented a further press release stating that the construction had an advance of 50%. When the project is finally completed, supposedly in the third quarter of this year, the Terminal building will offer visitors two floors with an area of 8,000 m2., and will be able to receive up to a million passengers per year.

Once the new Terminal is completed, the airport’s commercial platform will be enlarged

Once the Terminal is completed, the second phase of the project will see the current Terminal building demolished so as to be able to increase the size of the airport’s commercial platform; there will also be a telescopic Passenger Boarding Bridge (PBB). In addition, the airport has already inaugurated its new Long-Stay Parking area, see below for prices.

*The above figures were published on Dec. 31st, 2015. We used the currency convertor to provide you with an estimate of the US-Dollar equivalent of the total investments planned at this airport

Passenger Numbers – Reynosa Airport

From the year 2000 to 2010, Reynosa’s General Lucio Blanco International Airport had up and down results, starting with 154,970 passengers in the year 2000 and ending this period in 2010 with 198,138 passngers. However, since then, except for 2017, there was a period of constant growth. In 2011, Reynosa increased the figures to handle 216,599 passengers and then, in 2012, there was a substantial increase in the numbers to pass the 300,000 mark, closing the year with a total of 302,934 passengers.

Reynosa Airport surpassed the 300-thousand-passenger barrier in 2012 for the first time

Once again, in 2013, the Airport registered an increase of almost a 100,000 passengers, the total reaching 392,206. Then, in 2014, the numbers continued their positive trend to reach a total of 472,027, thus placing the airport in position #30 on Mexico’s busiest airports list.

After 5 years of growth, Reynosa was placed at #30 on Mexico’s busiest airports list in 2014

Of the 13-airport network operated by Grupo OMA, in 2015 Reynosa joined the group (of seven) that registered between half a million and a million passengers, in this case for the first time, having registered a total of 507,186 passengers, to show a 7.4% annual increase. On the domestic front, the numbers at Reynosa registered a 7.5% increase, with 506,674 visitors having arrived to the installations on national flights; however, in the international arena the numbers were negative, with just 512 passengers arriving from abroad, thus translating into a reduction of 28.6% in this sector, though, in reality, the international market here has never been of great importance.

In 2015, Reynosa Airport broke the half-million passenger barrier for the first time

In 2016, this Airport registered another positive year with  563,952 passengers passing through the Terminal; from this total,  563,354 passengers arrived on domestic flights and just 598 landed on international flights. This positive result saw Reynosa increase its standing on Mexico’s busiest airports list to position #28. Unfortunately, after 7 years of back-to-back increases in its passenger numbers, last year was the Airport’s return to negative results, with a total of  485,727 passengers and meaning the figures dropped below the magic half-million mark.

In 2017, the negative result saw this Terminal drop 5 places on Mexico’s top airports list, to #32

Unfortunately, for the second consecutive year, Reynosa International Airport reported negative passenger numbers in 2018, according to an official press release from Grupo OMA. The global headcount for the year at this Terminal was 466,934 passengers to show a contraction of 3.9% over the period. The domestic passenger market contributed with 463,303 visitors for the period to show exactly the same contraction as the global headcount: 3.9%; meanwhile, the international niche here registered a slight increase in numbers having reported 3,631 passengers to give an annual growth rate of just 0.4%.

The global headcount at Reynosa in 2018 was 466,934 passengers, meaning an annual contraction of 3.9%

In 2019, Reynosa returned to positive numbers regarding the passengers handled, the global figure was up 2.9% on the previous year with 480,524 passengers having transitted the installations. The aforementioned figure was split into 476,890 passengers in the domestic niche, whilst the international sector contributed with 3,634 travelers, both markets registering positive results with the former registering exactly the same increase as the global figure (2.9%) while the cross-border niche posted the minimal increase of 0.1%, a result that maintained this Terminal as the 12th most important (regarding passegers) of the 13-airport network operated by Grupo OMA.

Reynosa returned to positive passenger numbers in 2019 to post a global increase of 2.9% for the year
