Introduction to San Luis Potosi Airport

The San Luis Potosi Airport codes are as follows: IATA code: SLP // ICAO Code: MMSP

The International Airport of San Luis Potosi, also known as the Ponciano Arriaga International Airport, is located 15 kilometres to the south of the city at an elevation of 1,839 meters above sea level. The San Luis Potosi Airport is classed as Regional and is operated by Grupo Aeroportuario Centro Norte, S.A. de C.V. (OMA).

The International Airport of San Luis Potosi was inaugurated in 1985

This airport covers an area of 519.81 hectares, whilst the passenger terminal comprises 3,839 m2. It operates 2 runways, which together can handle 20 operations per hour, and its commercial aviation platform provides 16,000 m2; in terms of its geographic location, this airport is apt for the development of a cargo Hub, in fact, there are plans to this end within the local state’s development plan.

Nowadays, San Luis Potosi Airport is a Hub for the cargo company Estafeta

In reality, this airport has more future potential in the cargo area than the commercial passenger sector due to its geographical location but, without doubt, the State of San Luis Potosí is doing a very good job of promoting the entity as an adventure/ecotourism destination, as can be seen from the passenger figures below. The aforementioned is reflected in the passenger numbers at San Luis Potosi Airport, with the number in 2017 passing the half-million mark to close the year with 553,353 passengers (see below for further details), thus placing this Terminal as the tenth busiest airport of the network of 13 Mexican airports operated by Grupo OMA. Throughout 2018, this Terminal reported a healthy increase to register 626,512 passengers for the period, see below for further details.

San Luis Potosí Airport has been the base for the charter company Aeromaan since 2002

Investment Plans for San Luis Potosí Airport

At the San Luis Potosí International Airport, Grupo OMA plans to invest a total of MXN 381.3 mn. (US$ 22.1* mn.), according to its Master Development Program for 2016-2020. The Plan, released at the close of 2015, states that this airport was to benefit from an investment of MXP 31 mn. in 2016, followed –in 2017– by the largest annual amount over the five-year period: MXP 167. mn., whilst 2018 saw an investment of only slightly less, at MXP 166.7 mn. For 2019, this Terminal is earmarked to receive investment of MXN 14.7 mn., followed by just MXP 1.9 mn. in the final year of the plan: 2020.

From 2016 to 2020, San Luis Potosí Airport will receive a total investment of around US$ 22.1* mn.

The project to enlarge and remodel the San Luis Potosí International Airport was launched in November 2016. As for the use of the said investment, the works recently completed included the extension and modernization of the passenger Terminal, which now offers 26 check-in desks, 5 gates and a surface area of almost 13,500 m2.

Phase 1 of the extension work to the Terminal at SLP was initially to be concluded by the close of May 2018, however, the inauguration was finally held -on Aug. 16, 2019- after more than 2 years work

As usual, the Plan was divided into two phases; the first saw the addition of 8,700 m2, which encompassed the areas covering the walkways, the documentation area and the last-minute waiting room, the latter now providing 5 access gates and a telescopic Passenger Boarding Bridge (PBB); the passenger flow between the domestic and international sectors have now been separated, thus making the airport more manageable for its visitors. In conclusion, the new Terminal facilities permit the airport to handle double its former capacity, up from 600,000 to 1.2 mn. passengers per year.

With the inauguration of the Terminal, SLP´s airport is now able to handle up to 1.2 million passengers per year, double its previous capacity

*The above figures were published on Dec. 31st, 2015. We used the currency convertor to provide you with an estimate of the US-Dollar equivalent of the total investments planned at this airport
