The Tampico Airport is classed as Regional and is the most westerly airport operated by Grupo Aeroportuario Centro Norte, S.A. de C.V. (OMA).

Tampico Airport’s name honours Gen. Francisco Javier Mina, a hero of Mexico’s War of Independence

Tampico was founded on April 13, 1823., and is now Mexico’s top producer of petroleum platforms

This airport played an important part in the history of aviation in Mexico, being part of the first scheduled passenger services route which connected Mexico City with Tuxpan-Tampico-Nuevo Laredo-Matamoros-Saltillo-Monterrey and San Luis Potosi; these services were launched on July 12th, 1921. As for the present day, the passenger numbers at Tampico Airport in 2017 dipped slightly to handle 717,342 passengers, making it the 6th busiest of the 13 Mexican airports that make up the network operated by Grupo OMA; throughout 2018, this airport registered a positive result, having handled 736,627 passengers, see below for further details.

The Tampico Airport was in position 19 on the list of Mexico’s busiest airports in 2014

Passenger Numbers – Tampico Airport

The Tampico International Airport handled a total of 451,005 passengers in the year 2010. Since then, these figures registered a positive year-on-year trend for several years, starting in 2011 with 548,083 passengers. Throughout 2012, the number increased to 594,797 and then -in 2013- the figure crossed the 600,000 barrier to register 608,813 passengers handled. In 2014, the number once again increased to 688,893 passengers, meaning an annual increase of 13.15% over the previous year.

Tampico was positioned at #19 on Mexico’s busiest airports list in both 2014 & 2015

For 2015, the Tampico Airport registered an overall year-on-year increase over 2014 of 10.9% in its passenger numbers, having handled 763,744 passengers. Of these passengers, 717,587 arrived on domestic flights and 46,157 arrived on international flights, thus translating into an increase of 12% regarding the domestic market, but a reduction of 3.8% in the international sector. With these results, the Tampico Airport maintains itself in the (now) group of seven OMA airports registering between half a million and a million passengers annually.

Tampico made a 10.9% gain in passengers in 2015, making it Grupo OMA’s 6th most important

Unfortunately, after 6 consecutive years of growth, in 2016 the Terminal registered a drop in its passenger numbers to 717,599. The aforementioned figure translates to a drop of 6% in the passenger numbers at this Terminal leading to a slip of 3 places on Mexico’s busiest airports list, to close the year in position #22. This negative trend continued in 2017, when the Airport handled 717,342 passengers; though the drop in the annual numbers for the year was just 0.9%, once again the Tampico Airport slipped a further 3 places on the country’s top airpots list to finish in position #25.

In 2017, after slipping 6 places in 2 years, Tampico was #25 on Mexico’s busiest airports list

The only positive result regarding the numbers for 2017 was that the downward trend in international passengers was stemmed with a total of 43,616 visitors arriving to the Terminal on international flights, an increase of slightly less than 1,000 over 2016, but positive all the same.

In 2018, Tampico returned to positive passenger numbers with a total of 736,627 passengers transitting the installations over the period

Tampico Airport registered the lowest growth rate of the Grupo OMA network in 2018, with an annual increase of just 2.7% in the global headcount, having handled 736,627 passengers for the period, though two of the Group’s airports actually recorded contractions in their passenger numbers. In the domestic niche, Tampico handled 683,511 passengers, just over 10,000 more than the previous year, to post a year-on-year increase of 1.5% in this market; the international niche contributed with the remaining 53,116 to equal the domestic niche by adding 10,000 additional passengers, though in this sector this represented a healthy annual increase of 21.8%.

In 2018, Tampico upped its international passenger headcount by 21.8%, having handled 53,116 passengers for the period

Unfortunately, throughout 2019, once again Tampico (TAM) registered the lowest growth of Grupo OMA’s airport network with an annual gain of just 0.3%, after handling 739,143 passengers, of which 684,821 were traveling on domestic flights (up 0.2%) and the remaining 54,322 passengers were cross-border travelers, to represent an annual increase in this market of 2.3%.
