Introduction to Torreón Airport

The Torreon Airport codes are as follows: IATA code: TRC // ICAO Code: MMTC

The International Airport of Torreon, also known as the Francisco Sarabia International Airport, is located 14 Kilometres to the northeast of the city at an elevation of 1,124 meters above sea level. The Torreon Airport is classed as Regional and provides services from 07:00 to 20:00 hours (local time); it is operated by Grupo Aeroportuario Centro Norte, S.A. de C.V. (OMA).

Torreon Airport is named after Gen. Francisco Sarabia, Mexico’s famed commercial aviation pioneer

This airport, which serves the state capital of Coahuila, also includes in its catchment area the cities of Gómez Palacio and Ciudad Lerdo in the neigboring state of Durango. It began operations in March of 1945 and possesses two runways which together can handle 20 operations per hour. The surface area of the airport covers 364.16 hectares, whilst the passenger Terminal boasts an area of 5,447 m2 -over two floors- and is able to handle up to 174 passengers per hour.

With regard to the passenger numbers at Torreon International Airport, in 2017 the Terminal handled 618,930 passengers making it the eigtht busiest airport of the 13 Mexican airports that make up the network operated by Grupo OMA (see below for further details). Last year, this Terminal played host to 681,551 visitors, see below for further details.

Investment Plans for Torreón Airport

At Torreon International Airport, the projected investment announced in Grupo OMA’s Master Development Plan for 2016-2020 is MXP 130 mn. (US$ 7.5* mn.). From this total, MXP 31.3 mn. was earmarked for 2016, followed by MXP 20.5 mn. in 2017, and then a further MXP 14.4 mn. in 2018.

Over the period 2016-2020, Torreon Airport will receive a total investment of around US$ 7.5* mn.

For the year 2019, the sum to be invested here is MXP 15.6 mn., and, in this case, the largest annual investment of the five-year plan is scheduled for 2020, when the installations will receive investment to the tune of MXP 48.2 million.

Direct Domestic flights to / from Torreón

The Torreón International Airport currently offers direct domestic services to 7 domestic destinations, plus one international route. The domestic players here come in the form of the Grupo Aeroméxico affiliate: Aeroméxico Connect (1); the regional airline TAR Aerolíneas (2), and the Mexican LCC: Interjet (1), plus both the country’s ULCCs: VivaAerobus (2) and Volaris (2).

Direct International flights to / from Torreón

There is currently only one international destination option out of TRC, by way of the US carrier American Airlines, through its affiliate airline American Eagle, connecting Torreón (TRC-DFW) Dallas, to its base at the Dallas Fort Worth International Airport.

In December 2018, American Airlines -through its affiliate American Eagle- added a second daily frequency between Dallas and Torreon

Parking – Torreón Airport

There are currently two companies providing the ‘official’ taxi services from Torreon Airport: Transportación Terrestre del Aeropuerto de Torreón. and Transportación Empresarial y de Turismo de Torreón; the companies (together) provide services from 07:00 to 24:00 hrs. local time. The offices are located on the Ground Floor of the Terminal.

Passenger Numbers – Torreón Airport

In terms of passenger numbers, Torreon Airort surpassed the half-million-passenger barrier for the first time in 2007, having reported a total of 522,295 passengers for the period. Unfortunately the following three years registered negative reults, finally bottoming out in 2010 having handled 338,003 passengers for the year.

In 2011, the Airport increased its passenger numbers to 375,669 for the period. Throughout 2012, the passenger figure once again surpassed the 400,000 mark to close the year with 415,244 passengers; in 2013, the figure again rose and thus consolidated the airport’s positive trend, this time upping the number to 467,398 passengers. Then in 2014, Torreon registered a 12.06% year-on-year increase in passenger numbers to break through the 500,000 barrier for the second time, when no less than 523,783 visitors transitted the terminal, thus breaking the Airport’s former passenger record by almost 1,500.

In 2015, Torreon Airport maintained itself in the (then) group of seven OMA airports registering between half and million and a million passengers annually, in this case for the second consecutive year, having registered 556,449 passengers for the period, above the 523,783 in 2014. The 2015 figure translates into an overall increase of 6.2% over 2014. The domestic niche contributed to the total with a respectable 12% annual increase in 2015 to register 717,587 passengers; in the international arena, the numbers were only very slightly positive, having contributed 54,307 passengers in 2015, just above the 54,154 in 2014, thus providing the installations with an annual increase of just 0.3%. This global passenger figure resulted in the SLP Terminal dropping three places on Mexico’s busiest airports list to #28 in 2015.

The global passenger figure at TRC for 2016 was 646,898 meaning an almost 100,000 increase in the annual headcount over the previous year. The number of passengers in the domestic niche for the year was 592,140 and the international sector contributed with 54.758  passengers throughout the period. These figures show a global passenger increase of 16.3 % over 2015, meaning the airport rose 2 places on Mexico’s busiest airports list to close the year at #26.

For 2017, Torreon reported a total headcount of 618,930 for the period, thus registering its first negative year after 6 years of positive results. The domestic figure for the year was 564,256 passengers and the international niche added the remaining 54,674. This result means that the airport fell one place on the Top 50 Airports list for 2017, to #27.

Torreón reported a healthy double-digit increase of 11.6% in its global passenger headcount throughout 2018, thus returning to positive numbers having registered a total of 681,551 visitors transitting the installations over the period. In the domestic niche, this Terminal added almost 60,000 passengers -up 10.2% on 2017- to reach a headcount of 622,092 for this sector; the international market here posted a year-on-year increase of 8.8% to reach a total of 59,459 passengers in this niche.

And finally, last year, Torreón Airport handled 708,563 passengers to post a year-on-year increase of exactly 4.0%. In the official company press release, it states that the domestic niche contributed with 637,638 passengers, up 2.5% on the previous year, whilst the international sector registered 70,925 passengers to post a very healthy annual gain of 19.3% in this market.
