Airlines serving the Chile-Mexico international niche


The direct international air travel niche between Chile and Mexico is currently -Oct. 2019- served by two airlines: Aeromexico, the Mexican Republic’s flagship carrier, and LATAM Chile, which is part of the LATAM Airlines Group.

Both these airlines cover the same direct route, connecting the two capitals of the countries, whilst -for its part- LATAM Chile also offers connections to Monterrey (MTY).

Aeromexico, a founding member airline of SkyTeam, offers direct flights to Santiago de Chile from Mexico City, and is the only Mexican airline with direct services to this South American country.

Aeroméxico is -by far- the largest carrier in Mexico regarding the international arena, currently connecting to 50 international destinations. In the case of the company’s services to Chile, the Republic’s flagship carrier unites the respective capital cities of both countries: Mexico City (MEX-SCL) Santiago de Chile, with an average flight time of 7 hours (according to the carrier’s official Web page).

The Mexican airline Aeroméxico provides direct flights connecting Mexico City Benito Juárez International Airport (MEX) with the International Terminal of Santiago de Chile Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport (SCL) currently -Oct. 2019- offering daily direct services and operating the company’s Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft.

This founding member airline of the SkyTeam global alliance began operating its Chile services over 20 years ago with two weekly flights; by 2015 it had increased to 3 weekly frequencies and -as of Jan. 13, 2015- it increased its seat capacity (30%) on this route by incorporating its Boeing 787 Dreamliner to operate these services. In additon, –as of Feb. 2015– the airline also doubled its numbers of flights on this route to six; nowadays –as mentioned above– it operates 7 dialy direct flights on its MEX-SCL route.

Aeromexico is the only Mexican airline offering direct Mexico – Chile flights.

LATAM CHILE in Mexico

LATAM Airlines in Mexico City
LATAM Chile is part of the LATAM Airlines Group and connects Santiago de Chile with Mexico City, with an official connection to Monterrey.

LATAM Chile, formerly LAN Chile, is part of the LATAM Airlines Group and connects Santiago de Chile (SCL-MEX) Mexico City; throughout 2018, LATAM Chile, transported 181,395 passengers between Chile and Mexico.

The LATAM Chile services to Mexico are currently -Oct. 2019- connecting the Santiago de Chile Comodoro Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport (SCL-MEX) to Terminal 1 of the Mexico City Benito Juárez International Airport, operated on a daily basis using the company’s Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircaft to cover this 6,631 km. route.

For those of you interested, this airline also offers connecting options to Monterrey Mariano Escobedo International Airport (MTY), which are provided by two Mexican airlines, sometimes with Aeromexico, and sometimes with Interjet, both of which are LATAM Airlines codeshare partners.

LATAM Airlines came into being through the merger of LAN Chile and the Brazilian airline TAM Líneas Aéreas, with LAN Chile acquiring 20% of the Brazilian carrier on June 22, 2012. The merger process was completed on May 5, 2016., when the new airline group joined the ranks of the Top Ten largest airlines of the world. There are currently (July 2018) 287 aircraft in the LATAM Airlines fleet, comprised of a mix of Airbus and Boeing aircraft, and the Group as a whole is part of the OneWorld global airline alliance.

LATAM Airlines was the largest company regarding passenger numbers in Latin America in 2017, having registered a total of 67.15 million, of which 23.9% were transported on international flights.

LATAM Chile is the only South American airline to offer direct Chile-Mexico flights, operating the SCL-MEX route with its Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner; the airline became a member of the global airline alliance OneWorld in the year 2000, then -as LATAM Airlines– in 2014.
