Airlines serving the Guatemala-Mexico international niche
There are three Mexican airlines serving the international niche between Mexico and Guatemala, the Grupo Aeromexico affiliate airline: Aeroméxico Connect, plus the Mexican LCC: Interjet, and one of the country’s ULCCs: Volaris. Meanwhile, the only Central American-based airline offering direct services between Guatemala and Mexico is the affiliate airline of the Mexican carrier Volaris: Volaris Costa Rica.
With regard to the passengers travelling between these two Latin American countries by way of air transport, according to the Guatemalan Tourism Institute (Instituto Guatemalteco de Turismo – INGUAT), the figure regarding visitors travelling to the country who consider themselves as ‘residents’ of Mexico has been increasing slowly over the last couple of years. In 2015, the figure was 55,619 followed by 58,071 in 2016, whilst throughout 2017 the official figure was 59,257. Last year the number finally crept past the sixty thousand mark, the precise number being 60,639.

AEROMÉXICO CONNECT in Guatemala
Aeroméxico, the founding SkyTeam member airline, has offered direct services to Guatemala City’s La Aurora International Airport (GUA) from Mexico City Benito Juárez International Airport (MEX) since 2011, through its affiliate airline Aeromexico Connect, and nowadays -according to the airline’s official Web site- the company is currently -Sept. 2019- providing a choice of four daily frequencies.

The above services are operated by Aeromexico Connect using its Embraer E190 aircraft, which offers seating for 99 passengers (11 in Business Class).
As of Sept. 1, 2018., this route incorporated Aeroméxico’s new aircraft: the Boeing 737-800, offering 160 seats, so these services were covered with both the abovementioned aircraft and by both Aeroméxico and its affiliate Aeroméxico Connect. However, Aeroméxico Connect is the only Grupo Aeroméxico carrier to serve the country at present.

INTERJET in Guatemala
Unlike all other Mexican airlines, the Mexican LCC (Low Cost Carrier) Interjet launched its foray into international skies by heading south instead of north to the United States. In this case, this LCC’s first international services were between Mexico and Guatemala -as of July, 2011- to connect the capital cities of these two Latin America countries.
The company initially launched its direct services to La Aurora International Airport of Guatemala City (GUA) from Mexico City Benito Juárez International Airport (MEX) offering two daily round-trip flights, except on Saturdays when there was just one option, operating the route with its Airbus A320 family aircraft to cover this route.

However, the schedule for this route is currently -Sept. 2019- providing two daily services on Thurs., Fri., Sat. and Sunday; the other three days are covered with just one daily frequency.

VOLARIS in Guatemala
Volaris, the Mexican ULCC (Ultra Low Cost Carrier), was the third Mexican carrier to provide services from Mexico to Guatemala. In this case, the company took over the route -originally launched by Volaris Costa Rica- between Guatemala City and the Mexican Caribbean: Cancun.
These direct services from Volaris currently -Sept. 2019- connect the La Aurora International Airport of Guatemala City (GUA) with the Cancun International Airport (CUN), offering four weekly frequencies, on Tues., Thurs., Sat. and Sunday to this world-famous Mexican resort.

VOLARIS COSTA RICA in Guatemala
Volaris Costa Rica, the affiliate airline of the Mexican ULCC (Ultra Low Cost Carrier) Volaris, also provides services from Guatemala to Mexico. In this case, the carrier has connected the two capital cities of these Latin American countries since June, 2017.
The direct Volaris Costa Rica services currently -Sept. 2019- connect the La Aurora International Airport of Guatemala City (GUA) with Mexico City Benito Juarez International Airport (MEX), offering daily frequencies, up from the initial four weekly frequencies originally provided by the company.
Volaris Costa Rica is the only Central American-based airline to offer direct Guatemala – Mexico flights.
